The kids are alright

HAPPY FAMILIES

Looking for a family friendly holiday this summer? Thame’s Spear Travels should be your first destination, says Duncan Sherwood.

As a child my summer holiday in the seventies was very simple. A week, perhaps two in Cornwall or just to be different one year, Devon.

If we managed to see some sunshine, it was a bonus. A tent or static caravan was usually our accommodation, so shopping for supplies and cooking was something we all helped with (to give my poor Mother some sort of break from her normal routine). The sea was always cold and my Dad was for ever saying ‘make the most of it, this is the only holiday we’re getting this year’. My parents toughest challenge was finding something to do on rainy days. Eating a pasty in a steamed up car watching rain drops race each other down the windscreen was one fond memory.

When I became a parent, my wife and I were faced with the same concern of keeping the kids happy. Oh how things had changed. We had a huge advantage on my unfortunate parents. The cost of foreign travel had come down and, yes, we were able to go abroad. Guaranteed sunshine and a beach or pool was all that were needed for happy children. Job done.
